Mash water ratio

How do you determine the amount of water for the mash in order to achieve the best mash efficiency?

2.5/1 to one is the normal you can't go far wrong with, but certain mashes require different ratio's. Habe a nosey here

'Certain mashes' please give me a clue. I assume that it will be for the higher ABV's?
