So today I built a cheap mash tun.

Just wondering on what people’s thoughts are?

I wonder if it will work.
The filter you are using is a hop filter with a small surface area. I wonder if it won't clock.
Just try it out :), if it doesn't clog it's all good.

I built a similar one a couple of years ago. I use a large BIAB sack in it and I never get a stuck mash. I just use 4 small spring clamps whilst doughing in to hold the bag in place. Might be something you want to look into if the bazooka filter doesn’t work well.

It looks good to me, just like mine... You may have trouble with it maintaining temperature though. I built mine into an old kitchen cupboard, with 10cm insulation board, cut to size for sides, top and bottom.

hope you have a solid seal on the inner skin alone and have not attempted to make a seal between two skins without providing a solid spacer? otherwise be mindful to check for leaks of sweet wort into the void and insulation and the resulting microlife and mould that will thrive on it.

also consider filling the lid void with something like vermiculate or perlite..

Thanks for those tips and here's to you Mr Robertson. Did you have the insulated box already, or are you just saving on the labour of buying a completed version?

Best of luck,

Jim

Thanks for the feedback everyone. It’s definitely watertight and has been leak tested. It’s is insulated with compressed polystyrene so that should help with heat retention.

I will let you know how the first use goes on Friday.

And mine also, but I use a home made mash bag inside and a small S.S. sieve over the tap to keep the bag from the outflow, never had a stuck mash or any problems and get up to 72% efficiency. It's also a good idea to lag the outside of the tun with a camping / yoga mat ( £5 from supermarkets ) I usually only get a 1 degree C drop in temp. in an hour and a half.
Cheers

so brewery has been and it worked great. found a slight leak at the seal, only about a teaspoon of wort was lost so it should be a simple fix

Hi M Robertson. Did you have build plan or follow any guides? I want to build one too, but lack confidence.
Cheers.
