just started another brew and managed to smash my thermometer
luckily i had already got the mash on the right temp so safe up till then
just wondering how important is the temp for adding the next batch of water? :hmm:
is a rough guestimate ok? 70-86c , or does it have to be spot on?

Hi Toasted.

I tend to try and get something between 75-80 for my sparging. If you can estimate between 70-85 you will be fine.

Good luck.

cheers Dunfie
luckily my mums coming back a bit earlier than expected so shes going to grab me another thermometer ,bless her lol
so the worrys over can do it as normal

Not that it's going to help you much in your current situation, but when you go to get a new thermometer forget about the glass variety. For the price of a good glass one you'd be better off with a digital "Stick" probe thermometer that never needs calibrating and is absolutely ideal for sticking in the mash, measuring the temp of strike and sparge liquor etc. I also have a glass one, has been in its case since Christmas :)

Bribie, Can you tell me where you get the digital stick probe thermometer?

Take a look on Ebay, loads of them for around the fiver mark. They do tend to be fairly accurate too, I tested mine in a boiling kettle of water against a spirit thermometer and the digital one gave me 99c at boiling yet the spirit one told me it was 104c!

They aren't just for brewing, the idea of the probe is that you can use them as a meat thermomenter, jam thermometer etc as they go up to about 200 c. If your local home brew shop doesn't have them I'm sure a kitchen shop would stock them. I got mine from CraftBrewer http://www.craftbrewer.com.au/shop/details.asp?PID=764 (who also supply quite a few UK home brewers by mail as they deliver fast and I understand they are quite cheap for hops vs UK home brew sites .. No affilliation :D ) However I paid about nine pounds equivalent so you may do better on ebay, or locally.

I bought one from Ikea seems very accurate has timer on too cheap enough £4 sumat in kitchen bit. Great for leaving stuck in mash or through small hole in lid of hlt as you can set temp you want and it beeps like crazy when up to temp.

" I KNOW LUV SHALL WE JUST POP TO IKEA!!" COULD GET YOU IN THE GOOD BOOKS! OR EVEN BETTER " YOU HAVE AN AFTERNOON STROLLING ROUND IKEA AND WHILE YOUR THERE PICK ME UP ONE OF THOSE THERMOMETER THINGYS THEN YOU COULD GET A BREW ON IN PEACE

Thanks everyone, i appreciate your replies, that one of Growlers sounds spot on, shame i don't have an Ikea near me.
