Looking to brew a very light coloured IPA type beer, something like Blonde Volupta (odershaws)

Was looking to use Maris Otter extra pale, have been told by one supplier that lager malt is exactly the same.

I wonder if anyone could tell me if that is correct? Thanks.

First post here, have found the info on these forums most helpful.

Hi devonbru
I just wanted to say welcome to the forum.
Sorry I can't help with your question as I'm still fairly new myself. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will post shortly.

thanks, BruinTuns

If not replies/answers, will just have to try both out and see if any difference!

Grain colour is measure on two indpendant scales EBC and SRM both of which I'm not sure what they stand for.

Anyway, according to Brupaks website going by EBC Marris O extra pale is 2.5 and Lager malt is 3. Seeing as Black malt is 1400, 0.5 difference between the MO and the Lager is neither here nor there so I would say there the same for all intents and purposes. Don't know if there is a taste difference between MO EP and Lager but I imagine there would be

Brewers Friend have this calculator for SRM

http://www.brewersfriend.com/srm-calculator/

EBC stands for European Brewers' Convention, SRM for Standard Reference Method (both refer to final beer colour).

Hope that helps!

Thanks MM.

Have been using brewmate for months and happily taking a note of what colour my beer might turn out to be, but have never bothered to find out what SRM/EBC was

I use lager malt for all my brews. Bitters, Milds the lot.If I had a choice I would use Weyermanns pilsner malt but it does not really matter, As the saying goes it's what you do with it that counts. I use lager malt for the base then add10% f other malt e.g. Vienna or Munich with3 to 5% of very light crystal Caramalt, caragold or carapils. I like pale beers. I hop with Magnum for a base hop at 60 min and add saaz or hallertau milf at 15 mins and any high alpha hop at 5mins with a 15 min hot soak then cool.
Good luck
