I've made a few extract brews using spray malt as i have read that unless the malt extract is really fresh you will get the malt extract tang. If the malt extract is within the use by date would it be better to use this instead of spray malt.

Also does anyone know where you can buy malt extract in bigger quantities than most home brew shops. Buying it in 1kg bag is too expensive.

Cheers. :thumb:

I'd use the liquid extract (as long as it's in date) and then just use the dry malt extract to fine tune your gravity with. It's cheaper that way.

I've brewed with both and can't say I've noticed a difference - perhaps my taste buds are shot after a mispent youth smoking!

At the end of the day it's each to his own. I'd try a brew with just liquid extract and see what you think. If you don't like it just drink it with a hot curry.

You can buy 1lb jars of malt extract at holland & barrett for less than £2 each (£1.89 in my local one)... no tin twang? :hmm:

I cannot remember the details but the stuff from H&B is not the same quality as brewing malt extract. I have read a reply by Aleman on the the same subject and the advice was not to use it.

It's the quality . . . it's made from 'food grade' barley which has very high levels of nitrogen so you invariably end up with a protein haze. . . . Plus it is 'boiled' at a higher temperature to evaporate off the water to concentrate it so it ends up too dark.

If you want good quality malt extract the best you can do is to get 15Kg drums of it from someone who stocks Muntons Cedarex 'B' which is truly cracking extract . . . most HBS should be able to get it from Brupaks . . . but at a price. Barley Bottom could be able to get it from one of his suppliers though
