Hi

Is it possible to make a lager with readily available malt extract? (Obviously, using a lager yeast and the correct temperature)

Can soemthing acceptable be made with light malt extract?

Cheers

Cheers.

So will it taste like lager, jsut be darker in colour?

I am trying to get my act together to go extract. Was supposed to do i tat the start of the year, but haven't got round to it.

I need to buy a chiller, buy/make a hop strainer, and build soem sort of temeprature control device for my fridge to acheive better fermentation temperatures, but i think that's all I need. I obtained a (very very old) aluminium burco boiler from my grandad and want to use it.

Going to buy malt extract in bulk to make it as cheap as possible, as cost is an important factor to me.

There are various lager beers, they can be light, dark, amber, black. From pilsners to doppelbocks and very strong baltic porters. As the yeast byproducts level is very low (esters, phenols and the like), you'll taste and smell almost only malt and hops.

extra light is better yeah.

Just made a light ale using only Caragold as speciality malt, it's quite light (cloudy at the mo) but hopefully this can help you judge the colour;

When you mean bulk, are you talking 15kg or so at a time. Have you found a decent supplier yet, and if so, are you willing to divulge.

 Neil

i haven't found the best deal necessarily yet, however, Rob Walker pointed me to that place previously, and i notice the MaltMiller does something like a 25kg jerry can of Liquid malt Extract. will have to see what is cheapest. Will let you know what i decide!

Any tips for cheap but decent malt extract then let me know!

How much beer does 50kg of malt get you?

25kg malt extract (liquid) would, (I assume, based on the size of beer kits) get you 8 X 5 gallon batches = 40 gallons of beer.

its about 5kg plus speciality grains for an extract so maybe 10 times 5 = 50 gallon and i'd say more like at least 6kg of grain for a brew so 4 times 5 gallon = 20 gallon for all grain :thumb:

Assuming base gravity of 1.050 this would be 12.5 * 20 = 250 litres. I need 4kg of malt for 20L batch of such beer.

Sorry, i'm a metric guy. ;)

worcester hop shop will soon have extract at 3.99 a kg and their delivery is £7.50 up to 30kg :)

Do you know what quantities it will be sold in ? , i.e. preferably 1.5kg cans. If it's sold in larger quantities how long would it keep?

Why is it that kits are only 3kg to make 23 litres, if you need 5kg to make the same amount?

Since kits are made with 3kg of liquid extract, and make 5 gallons a time of (admittedly quite week) beer, my workings were 25 litre container, divided by 3, is approx 8 brews. 5 gallons times 8 = 40 gallons.

Me too, but it seems essential to mix up metric and imperial when talkign about brewing! :x
