My score is very low :S

It's disappointing but don't take it to heart mate it happens to us all. I've entered a few competitions cos it's a bit of fun, but I always take the scores and feedback with a pinch of salt. I scored 15 once with an ESB which I thought was rather decent :blush2:

The beer is judged on 5 different aspects: aroma, appearance, flavour, mouthfeel and overall impression and given a score for each with a maximum of 50 points available. I would say that anything over 30 is a very respectable score, 35+ is very good and 40+ excellent.

Thanks for your responses guys, I feel very pleased with the result now.

I'm also keen to see the feedback. In my opinion the stout didn't keep it's head very well and there wasn't a lot of lacing going on. That said, I had one of Fourpure's Oatmeal stouts yesterday and that doesn't keep a great deal of head either. I guess I'll find out when the feedback's out.

Head retention and lacing come under appearance which is only worth a max of 3 points anyway, so it won't have much of an impact on your final score.

I'll second this. There's a lot of subjectivity in beer judging in my opinion. I had entered the same beer in a two big competitions last year that were only a month or so apart. First comp scored 37 which bagged me Silver in the category; second comp scored me 25.

Yeah, it is opinion. Also I need to invest in a fermentation fridge.

In theory BCJP judging should be pretty consistent shouldn't it, isn't that what the course is for?

I once entered a comp at Brewdog Manchester where they had 6 judges, judging every beer on their own system. Getting six feedback sheets for each beer entered, made for some interesting reading. I think they also regretted doing that way after tasting 80 odd beers over 5 categories.

It also included a score for "How Punk is it?"

In theory yes, however in my experience it doesn't quite work that way in practice.

One thing I wish they would do is give you your ranking on the table, and maybe even the range of scores on the table. That would help understand across different competitions if your table was scored high or low, if that makes sense. I’m saying this partly as a thought following on from @JonBrew comment above but also tat I entered the Welsh National last year and based purely on my perception of the quality of my entrants to that and two subsequent competitions (albeit different beers) I think it was scored quite generously.

Yup, agree this would be very beneficial for understanding your score within the context of the category and overall competition . IIRC the LAB guys do tend to follow up with some stats on the competition to help with understanding of scoring etc but cant recall to what level/detail. Keep an eye out on their Facebook page.

Scored a 33 for my cherry & blackberry Bretted Saison. First entry into a comp, so pretty happy with that.

Not been on for a while as been manic busy. I'd originally planned to enter at Porter (Which I made in Feb) and a Pale. Never got round to making the Pale so just entered the Porter.

My first comp so a little apprehensive but actually really happy with the score and the feedback.

I received 34 with the only comments being they felt it was slightly oxidised and although the colour was spot on they would suggest using a little more darker malt.

Constructive feedback which I hope to put to good use.

Unfortunately wasn’t able to send my saison in as it had carried in fermenting in the keg and was so ever carbed that I couldn’t bottle it :)
Anyway I did win first prize at the festival with the Cherry Saison and a BJCP score of 43 which I was well pleased with.
And the guys at the festival managed to polish of the saison even with a lot of foam LoL.

Looked at my scoresheets tonight while drinking my entry. On closer inspection, my two judges said the exact opposite thing on head retention, esters, body and flavour complexity so..........*shrug emoji*

Yeah I was gutted to miss it but the wife's been struggling a bit with her pregnancy so couldn't stay away the weekend.

I'll be popping into see everyone on the 9th though. However with a 5 day old baby I won't be stopli for too long.
