Evening all,

I haven't been able to brew lately as I've put my back out :-(

So i've been sat planning instead.

A question I have had for a while is about liquoring back.

All the calcs seem to work out the gravity but not the IBUs?

How do you work out the final IBUs of say 40litres of 1050, 60 IBU wort diluted down to 60L or 1033 ?IBU.

I hope i;'m making sense, painkillers are spacing me out a bit.

Thanks in advance,

J

I believe once you have boiled you can dilute and IBU's will dilute in same ratio.

Thing is you will need more hops to get higher IBU's in more concentrated wort whist boiling. As higher OG means less acids extractable from hops.

There will be a thread somewhere with details of hop attenuation at differing gravities.

Oh and sorry to hear about your back. :( I bought a pump so I don't do lifting any more

Liquoring back has been a subject that has been at the forefront of My attention this last month or so.

I sold a system that the buyer does not want to liquor back at all and therefore has produced low yields I.E. not getting two 9 gallon casks worth from the fermenter.

The 100L Mossbrew system produces between 70L and 90L of beer which I assume is achieved via liquoring back so it must be a standard industry practice else they wouldn't be selling them.

Anyway I use SUDS which allows Me to set the boil length and final volume in the fermenter.

The IBU's seem to be about right even after liquoring back so I assume SUDS is doing the calcs for Me.

Not sure about other brewing software though.

So do we all agree adding water (do you need to treat this water)? to the boiled wort is acceptable practice? :wha:

I wish to upgrade my brewry but the end length with not be enough with what i have in mind.
The mash tun would be big enough..

As long as you are adding sterile oxygen free water it is not a problem ;)

Does “liquoring back” mean adding water to the boil to increase the brew length?
I don’t seem to have this problem as I have to reduce the length by boiling to 23ltrs.
My start of boil length is about 27ltrs and my brews are calculated for 23ltrs (5 gals).

No its adding water to either the beer or the wort in the fermenter . . . So you boil a more concentrated wort (Altering the hopping rate to take account of this) and then dilute it, preferably before fermentation, but you can do so after . . . which is where the requirement for sterile oxygen free water comes in . . . . It is a technique practised a lot by the big commercial breweries as they get more beer from each cycle of the plant . . . and as long as the additions are not excessive it does make very acceptable beer.

I generally liquor back by about 10% in the FV prior to fermentation, as I can only really boil 44L in each kettle . . . at an extreme push . . then with losses to the hops I get about 80L out so liquor back to 86L (18 Gallon) . . . My Pale Forum Brew was liquored back to hit the forum gravity, and did not really suffer at all.
