Light spray malt

Hi all

In my last kit i made (coopers lager) i used a beer enhancer instead of sugar, its just been bottled so yet to see how it turned out.....i noticed that there is something called light spray malt which it is supposed to be good for lager, does this stuff work the same as the beer enhancer? ie do i just use the light spray malt instead of the sugar the kit calls for? ie do i just put 1kg of light spray malt into the kit instead of sugar? or do i need sugar/beer enhancer as well as the light spray malt?

Sorry for such a basic question

Hi Chris I think the BKE is half spraymalt and half sugar so if you just use spraymalt then you need to add a sugar to it also, Im no expert mind just what Ive picked up on here Im sure someone here will be able to tell you more but I think the spray malt is for more body?

No don't add sugar.
Just use light spray malt, to keep the same strength, add 10% more spraymalt than you would sugar.
So if the kit asks for 1kg of sugar add 1.1kg of spraymalt :thumb:

Well there you go thats something new Ive learnt, Out of curiosity why is BKE half sugar then?

My guesses would be,
1. A blend of 50:50 spraymalt and glucose is cheaper than 100% spraymalt.
2. It is a generic product designed for beer kits in general, some beers such as light lagers don't retain the intended balance between malt and hops. If 100% malt was used instead of some sugar, in such a kit the result may be too much body and residual maltiness instead of the the thinner, drier beer expected.
