Hi. I use Young's Plastic fermentation containers. I have heard of light scuttling the beer from UV rays, but have never kept the fermentation containers away from light apart from when I am syphoning from them.

So far I do not think I have had and problems with the beer. Also there is no mention in the instructions with these containers to keep them in dark areas. So never have.

I just want to know if I should be worried about light with these containers? They are 5 gallon white/semi-clear plastic containers made by Young's.

ambient light from the room should be ok... but i'd avoid putting them in direct sunlight.

the process you speak of is called "skunking" where a chemical reaction from the sunlight takes place with the hop extracts causing off flavours/aromas. you'll know it when you've got it... cos it's foul!

I ferment in a temperature controlled cupboard in the house = no light  cept from the light bulb
