My feckin old laptop up and died....... And Im delerious with happiness......... She let me get the iMac I have been drooling over for months .........

Anyone got any Mac tips, etc Blah Blah

dont know about mac tips, but theres plenty to download for mac now!! :D
By the way, is your old laptop transformer 19v by any chance?, my old one blew up!

I love macs ever since working in a place that used them. It may take you a little while to get used to it, they are very intuitive to use which is a switch from windows etc. There's loads of games that dont run on macs tho, its about the only downside i can think of, but if you get a dual processor then you can run windows too. If you want to make music or vids then thats something macs do very well. Running for weeks or months without needed a reboot is something that you'll always appreciate. Not much in the way of tips for you tho cos mine have always been so reliable and easy to use.

welcome to macland

ni9e knows it and i second it

welcome to hassle free IT stuff

Although I'm unsure why you would buy a mac just to run windows on it - I've never been a fan.

I find its easier to stay with the crowd, more stuff to download, games run on it, less of a struggle to get the software you need. If windows is used by the majority, I'll stick to windows I think.

Although, I can 100% understand why people would want to use macs!

Its true there's heaps more games for windows based puters than macs. But for a couple of years or so macs have been able to run windows in addition to all the mac stuff. So while there probably isn't a good reason to run a mac on windows all the time it is a very good reason to get a new mac cos you then have windows aswell - best of both worlds. A nice stable platform for when you can't get fed up with crashes, plus all the benefits of running windows. Personally i'm happy with an older mac that doesn't run windows, but when the time comes to upgrade i'll be considering whether to go dual processor or simply pure mac. I don't miss windows much at all, there was one game i enjoyed and one piece of software that i used in windows, but they were the only downsides and the plusses were very many. I would never have tried a mac (probably for the same reasons you mention crE) had i not been encouraged to do so by the environment i was in, but wow i'm glad i did give it a go!

doesn't mac have what linux has for windows games and apps... WINE (Wine is not an emulator) ?

you dont even need to install micro$oft windows for running a windows app in Wine... that's how i run Beersmith on my Ubuntu box at home :thumb:

There is a version of Wine for macs but only for the newer intel models but why bother apart from games(although macs are catching up) every app you use on a windoze pc you can get a similar app for the mac :thumb:

I was wondering how to get beersmith to run on the Mac I was either going to use the Bootcamp function to alternate between Windows and X10. or a programme my mate recommended called parallels which will allow me to build a virtual PC on my Mac and let me toggle betwixt the two.

But if I can use WINE and save the cost of buying a licensed copy of XP I might give that a go.

What advantages are there in using Unix/Linux as I see it this leopard environment is the dogs rollox

The main advantages are you can't get a virus, spyware/mallware won't affect you :thumb:
free software from the opensource community

As for running beersmith try the mac version beer alchemy its just as good if not better :D

you'd be very unlucky to get any virus/malware/spyware problems running a mac just as they are

thats what I meant I mentioned opensource for other software that you might want but its free unlike windoze you pay through the nose for :D

dont be thinking that's you're exempt from viruses on macs or linux cos there are some out there.

Granted only a couple of hundred and you would have to be seriously stupid like run something you dont know as a root or super user for it to do damage... but there ARE viruses out there ... some of them quite nasty too!
