Hi Everyone,
So buoyed by the success of Homebrew 2, Homebrew 3 is underway. As it's allegedly summer I thought I'd try something a bit lighter so I've gone for Cooper's Lager this time. The twist with this one is that to give it that Mexican flavour and smell, I've added Lime zest in the fermentation and will add lime juice to the secondary.

Anyway, the reason I'm posting is that I thought that I'd give finings a go this time. I haven't used them before but from what I've read they should give the beer a bit more fizz which would be good for a summer beer. Fermenting is pretty much done so just added them in. Any thoughts on timings or even if it's worth adding?

Cheers!

I dont know about adding fizz or condition as thats down to temperature and pressure afaik, but finnings should clear the beer. there are lots of sorts about, i tried a generic beer/wine 2 part one a while back, and wasnt that impressed.

in order to use you need to mix them in in order to avoid mixing in the sediment thats already dropped it helps to transfer into a secondary fv off the sediment bulk.. the mixing in can increase the risk of oxidation.
while the transfering to 2ndary fermentor in itself helps to clear the beer, especially if you can crash cool it too.

To minimise the risk of oxidation use a 4" neck wine fermentor rather than a bucket for 2ndary, then leave to stand a day once transfered to allow any residual fermentation to push out the air, then u can add the finings cap and shake/swirl well to mix in.

And as you will probably be bottling as you can get a higher condition in the bottle (fizz) and they are easier to chill than a PB or minikeg you will be priming to condition so sediment in the bottle is inevitable..

if in a pb or minikeg however u could try cask gelitine finnings??

Thanks for all of that. I normally just keg but I think I'll bottle some as well this time. Like you say it's just easier to cool.
Oh and they are gelatine Gelatine finings.

The Coopers yeast drops out fine enough anyway, much faster than the Muntons kits (and all the other kits are Muntons).

I would save your gelatin for a kids party. With ice cream. :-)

Or a WOW :hat:
Where did you get that wierd link between fining and fizz? :hmm:
