I am your usual bitter drinker But my son would like me to make him some lager now the only lager i can remember i made a lager many years ago and as far as I can remember it did not taste anything like lager. Now I presume thing must vastly improved to these lager kits now. As I am bitter drinker but when Go to Malaysia I have to drink lager all the time. So what I am asking you guys is there a lager kit that tastes like lager rather than a real beer taste. somebody tells me that the Festival New Zealand pilaster larger is that true

If you want a real true lager you have to use lager yeast which requires fermenting at lower temps so you are going to need some method of temp control..

As an alternative you can do a fake lager using a clean yeast like nottingham but still try to ferment 16-18 if you can as this will help produce a cleaner beer.. Largering this also helps to give it a clear clean and crisp falvour,

I believe Coopers European lager is a true lager kit but I have never done it

What Cov says about lager temps is correct but there is a guy who blogs (brulosopher) who ran a triangulated test using fermentis w-34/70 fermented at 19C and correct lager temps (12C I think) and the testers couldnt tell the difference. I plan on trying this out myself next winter when I sart doing pseudo lagers again

I would use a Aquarian Thermostat to do my brews I am not clever to start playing with mixture so got to be with a kit I am afraid

The lagers mentioned above do not have the clean, watery taste of commercial lagers. Getting a true light lager balanced with say Pilsener malt is very difficult and you will need to know your hops very well. Or use a Coopers kit with lagering and cellaring and it can be pretty good.

Thanks guys will take your advice and get the coopers kit and the yest you recommend to go with it

Just a quick one what is the best sugar to use when brewing the coopers larger is it OK to use orderly sugar or should I go for brewing sugar or beer enhancer or a spray malt as this will be the first Lager I have made since the last one 40 years ago which was crap. So this larger making is all very new to me. I will buy the yest that is recommended above to do it would it be better to bottle it or keg it

Buy one of the brew barrel lager kits and use a lager yeast, the Kolsch yeast from cross my loof would be ok They make cracking stuff if your not in a hurry,

There's 2 Coopers lager kits. The European comes with a lager yeast the other doesn't. However for both kits Coopers advise you ferment at ale temperatures around 20*C (without extra yeast). I suggest you look at the kit reviews on both before you buy.
Like you the last lager kit I brewed was years ago and it was rubbish. But I have a European on the go at present which I tried to brew with the kit yeast alone at lowish temperatures (15*C) but it stuck, so its now sitting at 18*-19*C in my water bath and the fermentation has restarted. Others however have managed the kit yeast to perform as low as 12*C.
If it turns out OK I may have another go, but will use more lager yeast and go for proper lager yeast fermenting temps around 13-15*C.
And my advice is to not use 1 kg dextrose as the top up, but go for at least 50/50 dextrose/spray malt, unless you like really dry lager.

Just bought both s-23 saflager, simply because I know it works well and mj 84. Have also been using another mj lager yeast. All are getting a chance on a harvest lager and pilsner kit. The Tesco sale rocked....lol.

But all are kept at lager temps in a brew fridge and are dry hopped, again with a selection. Mosaic, cascade and Amarillo..

See simple lager is just complicated. And I ain't even into grain yet

The last decent lager kit fell by the wayside with the demise of Kwoffitt kits many years ago. Sad but true. The next best (imo of course) is Cooper's, tweaked as suggested within this thread.
