happy new year brewers.

so i had a new tub for christmas. the lid has no hole in it. the tub i have been using has a hole cut in the top which i covered with a towel.

i am reluctant to cut my new tub lid. i have a brew in there. there doesnt seem to be a build up of pressure, i asssume the co2 is finding its way out. however there is a distinct sulphur odour. could this be because the co2 is lingering in the tub and doing nasty things to my lovely yeast or could it be that i didnt sanitise the new tub well enough?

opinions, suggestions, advice, guesses are all welcome.

my recent kit brews have been very succesful. this current one is suggesting that it might be a dud.
 
i find cheap 5 gallon jerry cans work great with 1 top fitted with a air lock cost about 3 to 4 £
 
You want a CO2 blanket over the top of your fermenting beer, just make sure the lid isn't tightly sealed and everything will almost certainly be fine. I've brewed for years in a bucket with no holes in the lid....
 
thanks guys. that make me feel a bit better. it narrows down the possibles for my sulphur odour problems. im thinking it could be the sugar, i used mollasis and it is a bit pungent.

the lid is clipped on but it cant be totaly air tight.

why, richc, do we want a CO2 blanket?

the co2 blanket stops air getting into your beer pretty much the same way an airlock does.
unclip the lid and just lay it loosely on the bin/fv. this lets excess co2 escape and no air get in. ive been brewing kits like this for a few months and never had a problem. of course if the co2 does build up itll just pop the lid anyway because theyre not exactly tight.
