My last brew in the king keg unfortunately had the dreaded TCP smell.... So learnt the lesson that I didn't rinse the VWP out enough.

My question is how to get a good scrub/clean on the keg before sterilising to get the old beer smell out? I also still have that faint TCP smell so I want to give it a good clean.... Any ideas?

Cheers

VWP is a chlorine based cleaner. I use it myself and have never had any off flavours. I always do three rinses - one very hot, then two with cold tap water. One tried and tested way to remove chlorine taints is to rinse with sodium metabisulphite, which apparently neutralises the chlorine remains.

i switched to using laundry oxy for cleaning and starsan for sanitation, much cheaper easier and uses less rinsing water..

the basic unscented laundry oxi, is very effective as a soak cleaner 2-3 scoopfulls in warm water filling the vessel for 10-20mins..
Dont let it cool and stand for ages tho as a strong solution will drop crystals needing a lot of rinsing out..

and starsan is a persistent no rinse sanitiser so u mix up a batch and use as and when, i use 5ltr tesco ashbeck water as our taps stuff is too hard. then pour it in a spray bottle to apply when needed. a clean surface needs a few seconds contact with the solution to be sanitised and a trigger spray bottle delivers it very economically..
