Any tips for growing and keeping a short length of stubble? My beard trimmer doesn't get close enough, and obviously DE shaving leaves me pretty smooth.

Gillette adjustable set to level 1.

I've got a mildly knackered slim adjustable you can borrow to try out if you don't believe me :) I intend to strip and rebuild it as it's generally very good quality apart from a bit of slack on position 6.

I tried my own slim adjustable on pos 1 and it barely touched two day's growth with a Derby blade in it.
Nice, I'll see if I can pick one up to try.

You can borrow my 'spare' for a try if you want, you'll pay between £30 and £50 for a half decent slim adjustable, although you'll probably get that back if you don't get on with it you'd still lose postage and any charges.

I'll even chuck in a couple blades I've tested and found to be way too mild for me, new ones that is, not the ones used for test purposes :)

Over on another shaving related forum I sell blade selection pack to new DE shavers, I thought they might be of use here so if interested see below

I have put together a Blade starter pack specifically targeted at those new to DE shaving and wondering which blades to use.

Included in this pack is a selection of blades that are widely available and cover a broad spectrum from mild blades like the Derby, to super sharp ones like the Feathers.

The selection pack contains 14 different full packs of blades, which totals 85 blades.

All this is yours for a bargain price of £12.00, which is inclusive of paypal fees and second class postage to the UK.

There is currently a substitution in the pack. The Gillette Super Thin are no longer included. In place I have included a pack of Rapira Swedish Supersteel (Excellent blades).

If you are interested send me a PM and I will provide you with payment details.

Thanks buddy, that's very kind.

How is your AG setup coming along?

Quite nicely, I got a couple of cheap elements from China that sorted out the minor leaks on my boiler, around the old tesco value kettle ones, extended the filter in the boiler so it doesn't block up due to the hops and am getting some damn fine ale.

Not got around to a fermenting fridge as yet, but have the STC in the shed ready for when I get holds of a decent fridge for conversion.

Started using cornies a couple of months back and I'm sold on them being better than pressure kegs, but not as good as bottles currently, although less hassle to fill :)

I still do the odd experimental batch in a demi john, but I have pretty much settled on 4 main brews that suit my tastes.

Ta mate.

Ordered pack on Wednesday, received by post today, so even the Royal Mail were co-operative. A really nice range of blades from what I've read on the dedicated shaving forums, I should be able to find one I love from this lot :)

Goatreich

If you're about this weekend give me a shout (or PM me if you haven't got my number) I'll arrange to meet up and pass over the razor with some blades that I think are 'tame'.

I'm following this thread with great interest and may give a DE a go at some point in the future, for the moment I have loads of freebies still to use up, great topic chaps :thumb: Loving the look of that selection pack, great idea

It's cheap enough to try, you can get a vintage Gillette, tech if you want 3 piece, or slim twist if you want TTO for a fiver, plus delivery if you shop with patience.

The assortment on offer is excellent as it lets you repeat any testing as your technique improves, but you can get single blade packs as well, although not much cheaper than Steve's offer.

My first setup, 4 whole weeks ago, cost me under £15 for a TTO razor and some blades. I might have spent a little more since then, just a little bit you understand......

Just ordered a de89l, can't wait to try it out. Going for a straight after Christmas.

Without reading too much of thread..... What is a DE razor?

BB :? :? :?

Old style razor, double edged.

Depending on your age it's either the razor your dad used when you were a kid, or the razor you stopped using around 30 years ago when disposables and cartridges became the thing to use :)

I doubt you're young enough for it to be the razor your grandfather chucked out :p :)

If you used to have 'a good one' you're going to regret binning it when you see what they are fetching on the bay now

If you've not read much on blades, then be careful, treat the feathers with great care, my first go with one, and the second for that, was akin to unlicensed surgery on my face :(

The Astra Superior Platinum is my current favourite blade, barely even feel it cut the bristles and yet it stays sharp all week.

Not fond of Feather DE's I find them rough as anything 1st shave, good on the 2nd and blunt on the 3rd. I much prefer middle of the road blades

I've been using the wilkinson sword ones and they seem OK but not had the chance to try others. Any in particular to try and how do I judge if there better or suit me? Don't want to buy 100 and end up being unusable. Thanks

I'm thinking that might be the case for me, but unless I try I will never know.
