I hate it when the clocks go back ...

... but what I hate even more is that we actually mess with the clocks at all. aheadbutt

In the late 60's, the government held the "British Standard Time" experiment and it was a fantastic three years! :thumb:

The clocks were put forward in March 1968 and didn't get tampered with until October 1971 when they went back and returned to the current system! It was a great three years! No messing about with clocks, no sudden changes to what was day and what was night; just a gradual change of the daylight/dark ratio as the seasons changed. Perfect!

Then a bunch of moaning gits in the far north of the UK complained because their kids had to go to school in the dark!

All the statistics support the hypothesis that MORE children are injured in accidents on their way home from school in the afternoon rather than on their way to school in the morning.

This didn't deter the complainers so the government reverted back to the old system and as a result over 60 million UK residents are made to carry on changing their clocks twice a year, so that a few hundred misguided parents can feel better!

You couldn't make it up! aheadbutt

So we had some family from the missus over yesterday, and they invited us to visit next year. Abu Dabi.

Talking of Abu Dhabi....

The temperature in my garage (which has been shut up all day to keep the heat down) had hit 31*C when I went in there this evening!

I decided to lift a Premium Bitter to check how much it was suffering and had my very first ever "gusher" when I opened it.

The beer kept coming until I had lost about 100ml (sob sob), at which time I left it in a sink filled with cold water for about an hour and then poured it without any problems.

Good News - Although it's still a bit "gassy" (says he as he burps at the computer) it tastes fine!

Better News - The heatwave should recede for a few days with Thursday's temperatures between 12*C and 18*C.

It feels like sacrilege, but at the moment I have the garage doors wide open to try and cool the place!

It's been a while since I had a gusher but my first instinct is to stick my gob over it. Waste not want not as they say. :D

Tut,tut. I, being sophisticated, would have grabbed the nearest container (probably a pint glass) and attempted to simultaneously pour the gusher into it and drink from it. That is class, by definition. LOL!

Then a very large burp.

Oh man that reminds me of the burping contests on the night shift (on soda, not on beer). Funny how night times makes people behave differently from day times :laugh8:

Good times!
(yes I won a couple of times)

Very true!

The whole Shift would get an attack of the giggles at 3am and by 4am none of us could remember what was so funny ... :?:

... and we were all sober as well! :laugh8:

Happy Days! :thumb:

PS

Outside temperature now down to 19*C (it rained for a few minutes) and the garage now down to 25*C! :thumb:

Rain expected around here rond 0200 too, colour me surprised if it sets through.

I found it strange the other day that after all the whinging about how hot it was etc, that when I put the tv on to watch the cricket the whole day was rained off.

Dutto, I think my garage was 44C one morning last year when I checked it.
I don't usually check it by the way.

It's not hot enough! I'm going to have to put long trousers on at this rate.

Come on now!! You're old enough to remember the days when you longed to be allowed to wear long trousers! sick...

It was only when I got older that I realised that the reason my Mum kept me in short trousers so long was:
  • They were cheaper to buy.
  • If I ever ripped my knees all it took was a bit of sticking plaster to repair them!

You forgot to add you rarely had sweaty spuds in those days. :laugh8:

It seems like an appropriate time to bring last year's thread back to life:

I hope nobody's trying to brew over the next 3 days or worse still you've got liquid yeast in the post on the way to you! Flippin' hot on the DLR this morning and it'll only get worse by the evening.

Was planning to brew and I've got a starter crashing in the (food) fridge, unfortunately don't have a dedicated fermentation fridge yet so may have to reconsider and wait a few days!

It really depends on what you were intending to brew and what yeast you're using.

How many of us have got a brew fridge or hop storage fridge with a freezer compartment going to waste. That can easily be used to freeze sterilised half litre PETs of water or coolbox freeze packs which can be dropped into the fermenting vessel. Just put them in a new freezer bag to stop them picking up anything nasty from the freezer (woolly mammoths, polar bears, yeti, etc). Keeping a wet bath towel round the fermenter will trim a degree or so off the temperature, but remember this wet towel can be a breeding ground for bacterial infections so keep it away from the beer.
