Sunday I started early as I had a Fullers ESB clone planned. The Mash/Sparge and boil had all gone very smoothly with an 80%+ efficiency, so I was very happy.
I started my Immesion Cooler running and stopped at 80C to add a few more hops. When I re-started the water for the cooler I headed off to lunch expecting all to be well when I returned.
:| On return I found that the inlet pipe on the cooler had sprung a leak and had filled my boiler to the brim with cold water. At this stage I totally pannicked and was not sure what to do. If there had been enough room left in the boiler I would have re-boiled the wort to ensure it was sterile but this would not have been possible. I decided to drain the wort and continue regardless I could not think of anything better to do. The worrying part was the water dripping off the garage rafters back into my wort
As this brew was an ESB it had a fairly high OG so the dilution has still left me with an SG in the region of 1048, so this is not a big concern. On the plus side I now have 50L of wort, much more than planned but I now have to work out how to store it all, as my spare kegs are full.
Fermentation has started and going very well, just hope there is no infection.
Crazy how such a small part of the equipment can cause such a catastrophy!
