Hi, complete n00b, just got my first brew on the go, I started on saturday with a coopers lager using the coopers new kit. the fermenter has been sat in our utilityroom undisturbed at a pretty constant 24c (which going on the instructions is perfectly between 21 and 27.)

I was very very careful with the cleaning. the wort was darker than I expected but lightened overnight og was 1.036, i removed the krausen (sp?) collar today because the kit says "on day 3, or when the foam has subsided" - both of which were the case.

it doesnt appear to be doing a great deal, no major visible bubbling, but there is a thin "head" on top of the liquid. I just took the hydrometer reading right now and its at 1.014.

i'm hopefully worrying about nothing - but a couple of things are concerning me

1. its still very cloudy, even in the hydrometer - is this normal?
2. no major sign of bubbling - is this normal?
3. there is a good 1/2" or more of "sediment" at the bottom - is this normal?

i havent lifted the lid, other than to remove the collar, and i did this gently. if i put my close close to the seal on the lid - it actually smells rather nice.

sorry if i have put this in the wrong section, or posted n00bish questions that are answered all over the place - i just want to know wether I have cocked it up, or if I should just sit and be patient.

coupla photos if it helps

sunday with "sediment"

everthing seems fine and what you describe is normal. Just leave it alone and it will clear up when it comes to the end of fermentation. 1.014 is just about finished so let the yeast clear up all the **** etc. Check your hydrometer readings every couple of days when they have been at their lowest for 2 days bottle and let it clear :thumb:

Looks pretty normal to me (not that I claim to know much). It should clear with time. I always leave mine about 14 days in the FV so as to make sure the yeasties have finished doing their thing, and all the **** should sink to the bottom by then. Also once its finished fermenting, put it somewhere cold as this helps get it clear.

Im sure someone will be along shortly with far better answers.. :thumb:

thats such a relief!

thanks!

I'll keep people posted in case it helps queries in future.

so I cant ruin it by leaving it too long in the FV?

I understand that 2 consecutive hydro readings means the primary fermentation has finished

I had a pilsner that only bubbled for the first 2 days then nothing. I left if for 13 days (would have left if longer if not for slight disaster) and it turned out fine.

I'm still firmly new to all this and only on my 3rd & 4th kits so I know how you're feeling when you want the first brew to go perfect.

The hardest bit and believe me is leaving it in the bottle for a few weeks when you just wanna taste it to see if all that hard work has paid off.

Best of luck and keep us posted.

to help it clear you could add 15 g gelatine a couple of days prior to bottling. Do this by dissolving the gelatine in a little pre boiled cooled water then stir it gently into your brew :thumb:
