I think I cocked this up

Hi All,

I hope I have not cocked this one up.

basic bitter recipie for 27litres, 5.5kg of marris otter, 50 gms of chocolate malt, 50 grms of amber malt

hops were cascade.

anyway after the boil, chiller went in as per normal got it to a reasonable temp then tried to run off into the FV.

it ran for a bit then stopped...blocked hop filter, I paniced and reached for the big stirrer, after steralising it, plunged it into the wort and stirred a bit, eventually got it running again...couple of minutes later stopped again. In with the big stirrer again and again until I got the wort out..

Dropped a packet of s04 as usual into the wort and off it went, bubbling away like a good un.
This evening I decided to drop it into the 2nd fermenter ready for finings and for bottling on thursday.

Here was the problem. In with the steralised syphon tube, big suck, gob full of beer and into the 2nd fermenter, couple of minutes later syphon stopped, totally blocked with trub, took it out rinsed with boiled water, back into the beer, big suck, away it went again and stopped in a couple of mins. This took over an hour to get into the 2nd fermenter. The last dregs over the trub were still bubbling a bit so I guess that it is still fermenting.

I tried a quick glass with a pinch of sugar in. It tastes beautiful, it is at its final gravity and has been for a day or so. I do hope that the time it took in syphoning time has not got an infection in it as the top of the 2nd fermenter was open for a good time.

See no reason to worry, it taste ok then it should be ok. Wort is a lot sturdier than we give it credit for.

It'll be fine :thumb:
Beer is quite forgiving as long as you don't take liberties with your hygiene regime :)

Rob,

It's more than worth the money, time and effort to get a tap offof ebay for about £4 and fit it to your FV so you don't have to siphon anything (fit as close to bottom as possible, twist it sideways a bit). The less stuff you have to stick in your mouth the better

water butt tap

Better still get the mini bottler, my standard size tubing for syphoning fits the tap for dropping the brew from primary to secondary fv, the mini bottler bit means no chance of infection from sucking the syphon tube.

My other FVs have taps on them for little bottlers, this did not as it is a new one ( reclaimed mango barrel from the local take away) and I did not have time to fit one.

Usually I ferment in 1 fv then drop into a 2nd fermenter to get rid of a bit of crap, the 2nd fermenter has a tap on it so little bottler goes on that.

I will fit taps on everything and get rid of the syphon tube.
