Hey all!

Just put together my first batch of beer today in the fermenter, an American Style IPA! I've been doing a bit of research the past while on homebrewing since I have no previous experience and decided to try out with kits first before investing in more gear.

Quick question while I'm here - In addition the the ale kit I got with my fermenter, I also bought a Lager kit and was surprised to see on the instructions that it says to let it ferment at 20 - 25 celcius?

Everything I've read and seen so far has indicated that Lager bottom ferments at lower temperatures, some I've seen say as low as 4 - 12C. I asked the seller and also asked on Reddit homebrewing but nobody seems to know why. Anyways hope to learn some useful things around here!

The sachet says Beer Yeast on it and the bag with the malt says on the back 'Dried Yeast'. It was a pretty cheap kit - dunno if this helps
 
Ah! - It would be nice if those several articles i read and google searches mentioned that, instead of letting me think ALL lagers ferment at cold temps :laugh8:

True, the kit seems very minimalist. I suppose ya get what ya pay for!

Sorry B to cause some confusion here

Normal lager yeasts do ferment at low temps - so the articles are correct

There are some rare, specialist ones that don't

I suspect that the yeast in your "budget" kit is an ale yeast - so it won't impart a true lager taste, but I guess it will be fine

If you are bothered just buy some lager yeast and ferment it with that
 
Ah right, that is confusing since the kit says its for Lager haha

By Ritchie Products. They've been going as long as I can remember. Never used them so I don't know if they're any good. I'd brew it up as per the instructions with the yeast supplied. One would hope that the following the instructions would optimise the process, but who knows. It might be lovely.
 
Aye here's hopin'!

Reason I bought it was to take advantage of the colder temps, wasn't expecting it to need such high fermenting temps, I'll need to bust out the blankets!
