Hi

I’m fermenting fruit, usually I boil the fruit and use the extract to make wine. Today I’m mushing the fruit and fermenting. So how do I get OG given that there are sugars in the solids (inside a straining bag)?

might be a very basic question but it doesn’t seem easy to do accurately with a hydrometer.

Ive not pitched yet, it’s waiting 24 hours with a campden tablet and some pectin enzyme.

cheers

You're never really going to get an accurate OG but if you've "mushed" the fruit the OG you get from the must will be pretty close.
Best way would be to get a refractometer then you could measure the sugar content of the fruit's juice and do the maths to get an idea of the total sugar in the fruit.

Thanks. I’ll just take an OG tomorrow before I pitch then and take as a minimum. I’ll maybe order a refractometer for next time.
