Horse anyone ?

Would anyone buy horse meat if it was advertised as horse meat, or would you object to the sale of it, personally I'd eat horse, clearly the current drama in the news is because people have been buying horse advertised as beef and that's so wrong and the companies responsible for this should get a whole lot of brown stuff thrown their way but that aside does anyone fancy a horse steak ?

I would buy it. In other European countries horse is eaten the same as beef and chicken is eaten here.

My late Mum told about eating horse meat in the war, she said it was much nicer than beef, but they should be honest in what they sell us.

I have never eaten it, but if it was on the menu then I would definitely try it. It is just another animal at the end of the day. As long as the animal has had a good life, has not been given medication that isn't permitted in food and has been killed humanely, then I am up for it.

I have had frogs legs and snails in France, why not horse!

Eating horse would not bother me one bit.

There is a bigger issue here, not knowing the source of the horse could mean one of several things. first, there is phenylbutazone (bute), a drug that is given to horses. This could have made its way into the horse meat and although it's a low risk to humans, if someone is already anaemic, if could have more severe consequences. Second, the horses are either wild horses which are captured, stolen horses or old, knackered horses. In any of these cases, I doubt there will be much H&S going on in their butchery which could potentially end up with harmful stuff in the foodchain.

My guess is that horse would be more expensive than cow, just based on animal size but it is a guess and I'm not a butcher, farmer or vet so I have no real basis for this guess but if I'm right, people have been getting a bargain!

I'm not entirely sure, I do see a distinction between horses and other animals. Man has used them for work, transport, sport and recreation. We keep them as pets and give them names.

Then again, I like red meat. I have never (to my knowledge) eaten horse but I do like cows and deer.

Horse, Goat,.Cattle, I've eaten them all & most other edible animals including Squirrel,Badger hams etc & they are all enjoyable if cooked right.Most people would eat Horse & not even know it to be honest so i do not see a problem with it,however not knowing it's origin & history of treatment drugs etc raises issues of concern imho, : ken.
PS i'm not a Pikey & have not eaten Hedgehog, but i would give it a go :lol: .

For personal reasons I would not . . . mainly because I keep a horse, and have helped in the rescue of several horses that were going to be sold for 'dog meat' . . . and no they were not Old (3YO), wild (Thoroughbred), Stolen, (Ex Racer).

A beast such as I have described goes for dog meat at 600 quid (around a 500Kg animal) . . . I must ask at the farm how much a cow goes for.

Bute is a serious issue, and at the moment an awful lot of 'domestic' animals are being 'got rid off' due to the expense of keeping them, it could very well get into the food chain. . . I object to the 36 hour trip without rest food or water, to France for slaughter.

As for horses that are raised for slaughter (and given the number of race horses that are bred and don't make it, this means a lot of them), then as long as it is done humanely I have no issue with it, it is just a personal choice on my part not to eat it, although I may have done so in the past unknowingly.

I love the way it is being described in the media as 'contamination' sorry but that implies an accidental low level event . . .with the quantities of horse being found, 60%+, that is no accident! Someone here has found a cheap source of red meat, and has made a significant profit on it. . . . Especially easy to do with Mechanically Recovered Meat.

I have eaten a close relative in Zebra, as well as other sorts of antelope, snake, crocodile, and have tried squirrel . . .not sure I'd want to make a meal of it though

I would eat anything, the only thing I can honestly say I wouldn't be to keen to eat is a wild rat but one bred for the plate would be fine, and I don't mean just in a survival situation, I mean anytime, mmmmm meat's good

I've had horse in France, not surprisingly it tastes like beef, it was tougher to cut but wasn't tough in the mouth. It was a bit more expensive than beef in the Supermarche.

Personally don't no if I'd want to eat an animal that has helped mankind for hundreds of years. But then again if it tastes good in a lasagne :lol:

On the basis that I have eaten loads of Findus Lasagne's I must have eaten horse. I buy them for lunch and for a ready made lasagne they are pretty decent. If they said meat lasagne and the label said a mix of beef and horse it wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

I would be happy to buy horse meat I see no significant difference between cows and horses as far as meat goes so long as the same controls are in place for their slaughter etc.

I have tried many different meat from alagator and crocodile to bison and wild boar, horse meet and any other meat is always welcome :thumb:

Will be ordering some zebra steaks and maybe some other things soon.
