I eat most meats as i hunt all wild game and at least i know whats in it . I came home from chablis two weeks ago with six wild boar and it is delicious. I have eaten horse in france quite abit and its abit more of a grain to it than beef ,the thing with this scandal is its all supposed to be traceable back to the animal/individual for safety reasons. so its more about where these horse came from and how they where put into the food chain ,atb wayne

I don't see a eating a horse as being different than eating a cow, or anything else really. Morally I'd rather not eat any animal, but vegetarianism hasn't worked for me  the horse meat doesn't bother me, it could be the better part of the burger! it's what's likely to be in the rest of the burger that means I won't be buying supermarket meat again (though I rarely did anyway so no big changes to make), have they tested for rat, cat, dog, guinea pigs and badgers as well? Again, I don't morally object but that's a serious health issue!

Eating horse would not bother me one bit.

There is a bigger issue here, not knowing the source of the horse could mean one of several things. first, there is phenylbutazone (bute), a drug that is given to horses. This could have made its way into the horse meat and although it's a low risk to humans, if someone is already anaemic, if could have more severe consequences. Second, the horses are either wild horses which are captured, stolen horses or old, knackered horses. In any of these cases, I doubt there will be much H&S going on in their butchery which could potentially end up with harmful stuff in the foodchain.

My guess is that horse would be more expensive than cow, just based on animal size but it is a guess and I'm not a butcher, farmer or vet so I have no real basis for this guess but if I'm right, people have been getting a bargain!

That is the issue, personally I don't have any problem eating anything that moves (as long as it is "ethically" OK, I won't eat shark fin, but I might munch on a kebab every now and then and WTF is in them!!) thats why I've got sharp teeth and a digestive system that can digest meat. But the issue of transparency and traceability are the moot points here. Findus etc outsourcing their suppliers to find the cheapest product to sell at the highest mark up, and as for fast food joints, they've already found horse in Burger King, I don't see any of the others being any different.

For me it is simply a mis-selling issue.
I'm a chef and have worked in the trade for over twenty years.
The grade of meat is no worse than much of the stuff that turns up in pies, sausages and kebabs etc but in the UK we have an affinity with horses (and dogs for that matter) se we don't cook and eat them, despite the fact that they are probably far better for us.
None the less labelling standards are supposed to be stringent so expect some hefty fines to be rightly dished out!
Then we can go back to eating our 20% meat sausages with no worry!!

Just a quick correction folks. We don't eat cow, we only eat male bovine meat, cows we keep to give us milk. Also, we were eating horse up until just after the 2nd WW, its a red meat (not as dark as venison) with less fat than beef.

And another correction LR, I worked for years at FMC salisbury as a Butcher (fatstock marketing corporation). We killed thousands of cows a year along with prime beef, lambs, pigs etc.The Cow meat is generally of a lesser quality as cows work hard at raising & feeding their young then supplying all of us with milk for years.Decent "cow" meat would end up in butcher shops but the majority would go for pies & the like unless it has all changed ;) ken.

I've had horse in France before. It was ok a bit tough maybe, would try it again but I'd like to make the decision on what I'm eating though :nono:
Venison's my favourite meat

How many times have people said.... "I'm starving, I could eat an horse".... Now we are we're all feckin' complaining????
