The latest question to pop into my mind that I can't find an answer to:

What does "*hops* @ 0 mins" mean? For example, a recipes hopping schedule is as follows:

Challenger hops 7.6%AA 64g @ 90 mins
Golding hops 4.6%AA 40g @ 10 mins
Golding hops 40g @ 0 mins. <------ :wha:

Does the "*hops* @ 0 mins" thing mean as you turn off the heat, add the last hops? If so, how long for...? Until its been cooled enough to pitch yeast?

I've been using the following guide to get my head around the AG process, but the recipe doesn't state "hops at 0" so just looking to clarify.

I'm sure this is a really daft question, so I apologise. I'm sure ill look back on it and cringe but I'd rather nit ruin my first AG brew right at the end!

Hi , you got it right . 0 mins is when you switch heat off . Ideally you switch heat off add your hops then give your wort a little stir leave 10 mins then start to use your wort chiller (if you have 1 ) 20 mins later you drain wort out into fv ( at pitching temp) . :thumb:

I normally leave mine for an hour before chilling. Does leaving it longer have any advantage?

Probably get more out of the hops but also risk possible chill haze and infection , i think i would just add more hops and get chilling asap .

I don't chill my BIAB brews. I turn the heat off and wait for the wort temp to fall to 90C, which takes about 10 minutes. I add the hops for 20 minutes then get it into the FV.
I'm not saying this is the best way, it's just what I do :thumb:

Pittsy, do you take the hops out straight away before chilling or leave them in right up until you pitch the yeast?

As I won't be using a worth chiller, I will be cooling mine down to 5c overnight then back up to pitching temp - when would I discard the hops?

A hop strainer attached to your tap in your boiler is the best way by draining the wort . I use a wort chiller so i drain after chilling .
