Now is the right time to give your new hop plants a good feed. A high Potash tomato food is ideal. Follow the manufacturers instructions, do not over feed.

is it ok to do this in the first year (I planted mine in April) but the letter that came with it said feeding in Yr 1 may "scorch" it or something?

For first year hop plants, I recommend a weak feed (1/2 the dose). Young hop bines have very tender leaves and if you splash them with feed it might scorch the leaves. Have you noticed the bottom leaves goung slightly yellow yet?

Not sure about "yellow" will have to check but the lower leaves are in a poorer condition, curled up a bit, some have been munched on by something

I've been spraying with an organic pest killer (think it's just glorified soapy water tbh) but it took me a few wks to realise that blackfly lurks underneath the leaves so you really have to lift each leaf up and spray under if you want to get the little buggers
