Homebrew kit shelf life

I was thinking of buying 2 or 3 kits online and having them shipped in one go to save on shipping costs (I live overseas).

How long does a kit last (2-tin kits and extract kits) and what's the best way to store them (in a fridge?). I only have room to make 1 kit at a time, unfortunately.

When I make a kit I take the time to go through my LHBS and select the Kit with the longest best Before date, and the longer they are sat in the wholesaler/Retailers shelves the more likely they are to acquire THT (That Homebrew Taste). The guy that formulated the York Brewery kits would only allow a 12 Month BBD, although they were good for longer than that.
