I have a tiny microbrewery trading under "Adomant Real Ale" and sell the odd pin to some local pubs. The beer sold is a mild called "Heroes Mild" and, because I am not really doing it for much profit, it is sold on the understanding that 50p per pint goes to the "Help For Heroes" charity. Mild is not necessarily my favourite beer, but it seems to be the most consistent to produce and a reasonably low ABV which means the Excise duty is not prohibitive.

Thanks for the welcome! I am from Great Leighs (halfway between Chelmsford and Braintree).

I am aiming to have a pin of the next batch in one of the local pubs at the end of next week if all goes to plan, it will either be the King William, Dog and Partridge or St Ann's castle.

I have a full time job doing something less interesting than brewing, unfortunately - typically I'll make 3-4 pins per month of the mild on spare weekends. I make other bitters, stouts, lagers as well, but the mild is the only one I trust to sell a cask of right now.

Any of you guys members of CBA or Camra locally in Essex ?

So, how does the selling for home brew work? Do you need a licence, certificate or is microbrewing exempt?

Would love to try this out myself. Helped a friend brew many years ago and it was great, although his wife was not pleased with the state of the kitchen afterwards......

Oh, I am from Essex too, Chelmsford (which is how I found this thread in Google).

There is quite a lot involved actually with planning permission, HMCE registration. There is a good book called "The Microbrewers Handbook" which explains it very well. Your need to spend quite a bit on equipment too (at least I did).

Are you a member of CBA ? I'm hoping to get a Chelmsford section going.

For homebrew, garage or shed is better than kitchen - all the boiling tends to upset the missus!
