Hi all,

I'm due to start my first brew over the next few days, a hoegaarden clone!

I've seen the following recipe on american website homebrewtalk http://www.homebrewtalk.com/f12/celis-w ... one-77698/ .

The recipe is for a total of 5 gallons(us). But after converting to imperial it comes out at around 4 gallons. Is this right or do i not need to convert? Also on the side of my youngs fermentation bucket graduations are for litres and gallons, am i right in assuming the gallons are for imperial gallons.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. :)

1 US Gallon is 3.875L so 5US Gallons is about 18.9L (One corny full )

If you want to make 5 UK Gallons (Which is what your FV will be marked in) multiply the ingredients by 20% (Or use the recipe pages to enter the recipe as is and then scale it to 23L.

Thanks for that Aleman. I'm not too bothered about getting it up 5 imperial gallons, as long as the amount of water is correct for the ingredients/recipe that's fine.

To put AM's accurate answer in a different way; 1 US pint = 16 fl oz. where 1 Imperial pint = 20 fl oz.
They still have 8 of their pints to 1 of their gallons.

If you're right on that AM, and I suspect you are, I've just been educated yet again!
I was under the impression that there were 28.4ml to the Imperial fl oz.

1 ltr = 1.76 pints (imp) = 35.2 fl oz (imp).
1000ml / 32.5 = 28.409ml.
1 fl oz (imp) = 28.4ml.
1 pint (imp) = 568.18ml.
1 fl oz (US) = 28.4ml.
1 pint (US) = 454.54ml.
1 gal (imp) = 4.545 ltrs.
1 gal (US) = 3.636 ltrs.

Turns out that I have in fact misremembered.

A UK fl oz is indeed ~28.4 ml . . . but a US fl oz is nearly 30 ml

Corrected figures, thanks to AM and eric

1 ltr = 1.76 pints (Imp) = 35.2 fl oz (Imp).
1 ltr = 2.11 pints (US) = 33.82 fl oz (US).

1 pint (Imp) = 568.18ml.
1 pint (US) = 473.12ml.

1 fl oz (Imp) = 28.4ml.
1 fl oz (US) = 29.57ml.

1 gal (Imp) = 4.545 ltrs.
1 gal (US) = 3.784 ltrs.

This Forum never stops educating me!
