I'm new to this forum type thing but have brewed all grain for many years and thought I better join in the fun on here. I have one question/problem which is that i cannot get a good hop aroma in the beer either from a bottle or cask. I have tried hopping at the end of the boil or dry hopping, but all my beer smells malty.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers from the South Beach Brewery (Northumberland)

I'm not a dry hopper, but growing my own Goldings, I find hitting the brew with 25 or 50 grams of them straight from the freezer, right at the end of the boil, does the trick.

Welcome to the forum BTW.

I have tried Styrian, and also recipes with Saaz, Challenger and Fuggles but still nothing exiting in the 'nose' department, beer tastes good I just feel it lacks something..........might just have to increase quantity for a shorter time in the boil.

Have you tried Aroura [super styrian], did a few summer single hop brews last summer and found them very hoppy.

A couple of hops you might consider experimenting with, which I have used to great effect recently, are Amarillo Gold and Bramling Cross.

I used Amarillo Gold in a porter a few months ago and it really penetrated the malt. I used it both early and late during the boil for bittering and aroma - truly an 'all-purpose' hop.

Bramling Cross just smells fantastic - my choice of aroma hop for a 'tripel' because it's got a nice spiciness. Works well dry-hopped.

Just an update of 'hoppy beer', I used Amerillo, Simcoe, Cascade, Chinook and Centennial in the brew at it was great, with a fantastic aroma and just enough bitterness......... :)
