Hello

I'm Jon and I like beer :) I've been browsing these forums for a few days and decided to register and start my first brew. Looking forward to it!

welcome to brewing its a very rewarding and interesting pastime one you can delve into as deeply as you like or just spent the odd hour on kit brewing every few weeks ;)

Thank you all for the welcome :) I am brewing the Festival Razorback IPA kit. I started it on Saturday evening. I went out Sunday afternoon and I could see the water level in the airlock was moving, suggesting that pressure was building up. Got home just now (Monday evening) and the cap had blown off (I can't have put it on correctly). Should I be okay? It is bubbling away nicely at the moment though.

I agree, that is what appeals to me about this hobby, something I can do occasionally. I don't drink that much so I will probably only do a few brews a year but I am enjoying it so far :)

Welcome.
You sound as if you are at the early stage of the primary fermentation where, if conditions are right, the krausen (yeasty foam) on your brew could hit the lid and possibly bubble through the airlock. If this happens you don't want the lock to become blocked so you can fit a blow off tube until the fermentation dies back (look this up on the forum ) or simply crack open the lid to vent the FV and place a clean tea towel or similar over that part of the lid and allow the krausen to bubble out of the FV, resealing the lid when this stops. Latter method may involve some mess though.

Thank you, yes I can just about see through the FV that a Krausen has formed and hit the lid. It is bubbling perhaps every 10 seconds or so at the moment but since I put the lid back on (properly this time!) it has stayed there and all seems fine. I don't yet see any signs of the krausen going into the airlock just yet but I will monitor it closely. Nice smell though :)
