Hi everyone
I'm ben, been talking about brewing my own ale for ages and this christmas my wife brought me kit. All from wilkos, got the golden ale kit and am trying to curb my excitement so I can get it all right.
That's why I have joined the site, already had a quick look at the posts and fans and you all seem like a friendly bunch. I will try not ask to many stupid questions but I do have just one I could not find answered.my fermentation vessel does not have an airlock, or indeed a hole from one. It's also from wilkos. Do I need one or can I get brewing

Great to meet you all, wish me luck

Yay I can get brewing tonight. Tbh I wanted to keep it as simple as possible for my first time. Then step it up when I get a better understanding.

Cheers for the great news

Welcome to the forum

I'm assuming you have the youngs fv with the snap top lid? If so they aren't airtight, just leave a small part of the lid "un-snapped" and you will be fine :thumb:

It could be the Wilko fv, which is airtight, I've just found out after a loud bang in the kitchen when the lid blew off  just un-snapped the lid a bit to let the CO2 out

This is the one off the wilko website wilko fermenting bin and lid
Do I need to leave the lid slightly off, I don't like the idea of a Big Bang... :-)

Sorry if I am not allowed to post links

If from wilkos, it'll be an airtight one aye. Little ridges round the rim of the lid for strengthening etc. good sturdy things, use em for grain storage, practically vacuum packs the stuff, which is useful if you're buying 25kg a time:grin:

Lid slightly loosened at one side will be fine to stop too much air transit, as aforementioned.

I use airlocks full of cheap vodka, but then I'm a) newly converted from winemaking and b) hygienic to the point of insanity

As Duncs says just loosen it a tiny bit and the co2 will escape. One of the lids that I bought has a pre drilled hole for an air lock. I try not to use it but when I have to, I tape it up as they are useless on some FV's.

Welcome

Matt

Cheers for all your help loosened the top and wrapped it up in a blanket to keep it warm, wife says already the beer is getting more time than her lol.
Will post the results good or bad as I go. .
When my shed is finished I think I will have more than one on the go

You almost certainly will, then a temp controlled fermentation fridge, then all grain. It's a very slippery slope
