Hi all i have just go a hambleton bard old english kit i was told it is a bit like Theakstons OP is it true how strong is the produced beer? can i make it to a lesser amount to make it stronger and more full tasting?

Graeme

Don't know what the OG of these dry kits would be but you could try making it up to 20 or 30 pints instead of the recommended 40 and take the OG with a hydrometer. I imagine you'd want it to be about 1050 to 1060 for OP. If the gravity is too high, add more water to get it to where you want. Upping the strength by reducing the volume is fine within reason.

Thanks for that it also says use brown sugar is this demarera or muscavado sugar

cheers graeme

I have just made the same kit. I used dark brown sugar. Mind you a didn't read the instructions to well and added 2 kg of White sugar and 1 kg of brown!! Instead of 2lbs White 1 lb brown!! Set it off before I realised! Og of 1.076 and abv of 9%!! lol. The things guna take off!!!!

cheers for that ill have a look in morrisons when i go shopping enjoy your 9% beer :drink:

Muscovado and Demerara are both brown sugars. I think Muscovado has a more distinct flavour which may or may not be what you want. Go with the one you prefer...
