Hello all

I have been growing hops for 4 years now and this year with all the rain I have had noticed more insects (although fewer aphids) and also I am seeing this happening to the leaves. I am thinking Downy Mildew.

Any thoughts?

These look a like 'old' leaves to me lower down the bine which are just starting to die off, which is nothing to worry about, unless all the leaves are the same . What are the top leaves on the bines like? Have you got any burrs forming.

Burrs are growing. I have lots of burrs growing. I had some other lower leaves turning yellow and trimmed them off. Will have a look higher. From the ground it looked similar. Some of the plants totally eaten by insects. Will post today of higher leaves.

If 'insects' are chewing away at your plant its most likely aphids like blackfly. The simple remedy to that is a regular soapy water spray. If you have lots of burrs then you may end up with lots of hops, which at the end of the day is all we are after athumb..

Cheers Terry. I have 6 plants. One ruined by insects. Others are wilting slightly. I was wondering if I watered with too much soapy water and that’s why I am seeing the leaves so damaged.

Thx for the tip on black fly. I was looking for traditional greenfly. Been out in Garden today and they look ok with exception of the insect ridden plant (fuggles).

May spray tonight after sun goes down.

Cheers again.

I thought that I had lost my hops plants after a hot Saturday a few weeks back. They too wilted badly due to lack of water and subsequently I have slowly lost about 40/50% of the original leaves, but the plant has sent out new shoots and it is now mostly covered in burrs. But a major lesson learned for me is to keep them well watered especially since they are in pots. I make up soap solution by dissolving ordinary soap in water or using dluted liquid soap (from Robert Dyas) and have never had any problem when I have used it irrespective of what plant I sprayed.

Thx Terry. I think I caused this when I sprayed last week. I think the solution was too strong that I used or the fact the Sun was still out. Otherwise I have removed the dodgy leaves and plant has recovered.
