Hello everybody! I’m new to London’s east end and looking around for fellow members of the homebrewing community. Seems like I’ve found them!

My wife and I (no kids) relocated from Chicago the other month and my brewing gear has just been delivered, so I’m ready to get to work! My equipment set is pretty basic - just some large pots, plastic buckets and glass carboys. I haven’t got anything for temperature regulation so it's almost exclusively ales I'm working with. Though I did brew a marzen a few years back without any real temperature controls, and it turned out very tasty! The place we’re in has a very cool cellar, so I’m thinking of having another go at a lager this winter - maybe a maibock. But first, something simple and quick that will be ready to drink soon - I think a roasty mild will be just the thing.

I got started with homebrewing in 2013, after returning from London to Chicago. My friend had been homebrewing since his university days - while it’s not legal for someone younger than 21 to buy alcohol in the US, it is totally legal to buy all the ingredients for homebrewing! I imagine his first batches of dormitory homebrew must have been pretty rough stuff… But I was fascinated, and picked up a copy of Charlie Papazian’s The Complete Joy of Homebrewing. Read it cover to cover, and I’ve been brewing regularly ever since! I set up my home brewery in Untappd (Tongue In Cheek) where I like to post the brews I've created for family & friends to check in.

Somewhere around here in one of these boxes is the rest of my brewing library. I downloaded the water quality report from my local supplier - very different profile from what I’m used to working with! Now I’ve just got to find a good source of supplies, and I’ll be ready to go! It looks like there aren’t too many physical shops around London, from what I’ve been able to find? Looking forward to conversations with you all to find out more about how things are done here!

Welcome to the forum.
Use yeasts that can tolerate temps within your brewing areas to allow brewing of different styles until you get temp control if ever.

Welcome to the forum.

In terms of suppliers, there aren't many physical shops in London. Only ones I can think of who sell ingredients on the side a33 Water Into Beer in Brockley and London Beer Lab in Brixton. Both south of the river from you. I tend to buy online from themaltmiller.co.uk, geterbrewed.co.uk, or brewkegtap.co.uk.

If you're looking for online or in-person meets, then please check out London Amateur Brewers - https://londonamateurbrewers.co.uk/. There are a couple of US transplants who attend too.

Welcome to the forum my son lives near you in Hackney. Have you discovered the Five Points brewery yet?
I have - good stuff! We stayed in Bethnal Green for a bit while hunting for a flat - never did make it to the Five Points taproom. But when we returned to the Pembury Tavern - a favorite from our last round in London - we found that it's now a Five Points pub. The best cask red ale I've ever had! One of these days I'll head over to their taproom after work for a closer inspection - I have heightened expectations!

Another brewery in the area that's really impressed me with their offerings is East London Brewing - I can see their brewing facility is within walking distance, but I can't tell from their website whether there's any on-premises facilities. Will have to bicycle past this weekend to have a gander.

Good to know - thanks for the advice. It looks like the Malt Miller is a sponsor here so I will be putting together an order very shortly! I did stumble across teh London Amateur Brewers group and saw they have a meet-up this Monday - I'm planning a visit to meet up in person. It'll have to be next month's meetup before I have something to share!

My son had his wedding reception at the Five points brewery in May. I brew a clone regularly.

Hi,
The meeting this Monday has been moved to next Monday. There’s also a FB group, https://facebook.com/londonamateurbrewers
We have a couple of US guys who attend most meetings.
We also run a couple of home brew comps, Lager Than Life, in March, and LAB Open which should be in May, just sorting out final details before the official announcement.
