hi everyone im new to the forums and just had a quick question.
in the past i have brewed a batch of lager and it came out fine so this time i tried using a bitter. i used a norfolk wherry homebrew kit.
iv just siphoned out the beer into the pressure barell and noticed that in the primary fermentation tank there was a thick layer of green slime/mould at the bottom?! im pretty sure that this means that the beer has gone off and is undrinkable? but what could i have done wrong? i thought i had sterilized everything very well
:wha:
if anyone can help then thanks in advance!

for 8 days, it said in the instructions 3-6 days at 18-20 degrees but i think it was slightly cooler around 16 degrees and colder at night time? u reckon i should just chuck it?

sounds like you done everthing right may be down to sterilising issues myself personally would not drink it. It could be alot of different things though. Was it covered and have an airlock while fermenting did you pitch yeast at correct temp etc

First things first, taste it and report back.

We are always worrying about something, and it usually turns out fine.

Fingers crossed for you.

it was in a sealed fermenting bucket but i took the lid off a few times when i had to use the hydrometer, i havent tasted it but i dont know what it should taste like as its only just finished the first fermentation! i will try and upload a picture later!

I have just bottled my first brew of Woodforde's Wherry, and it too had a slightly greenish deposit at the bottom of the FV.

The beer itself, however, tastes fine. Although the majority of the brew is conditioning away in bottles, I DID take the last 2 pints from the bottom of the barrel and let the deposit settle in the fridge for a couple of hours. Having sampled (= drank the lot!) those 2 pints, I have no fear for the remainder.

I should say that the fermentation stalled (the kit's BBD was 12/2010) and I added a sachet of Munton's yeast to get it going again, so that may have had something to do with the deposit.

You say you used the hydrometer a few times? Did you put the hydrometer into the fv or did you draw liquid out and test?
If so did you sterilise evreything that touched the beer?

Report back: have you tasted it yet? Are you sure it's just not the trub at the bottom? If it tastes really bad, it's infected. You'll know, trust me. Yeast produce some nasty looking byproducts that make you think it's gone pear shaped. But taste it to be sure.

I've had a few bottles that didn't seal properly. If the smell didn't give it away that it was bad, the taste certainly did!
