I love my Grainfather, but I hate the fact that there are no carry handles on it. So I made some from some webbing straps. These are cheap to buy on ebay etc.
It's made from 2 x 1.5m webbing straps (which I think is 2 3/4 square furlongs for you American folk ).
Each strap makes one handle.
Half way down each of the webbing straps, you need to make a non-slip loop - this will form the handle that you stick your hands in. There are probably different/better ways of doing this, but it worked for me.
Start by looping the end of the strap through the same hole
Pull it tight. This stops the strap from sliding through the buckle
Go back through the other side of the buckle...
and pull that tight too.
This forms a non-slip loop in the middle of the strap that will form your handle.
Now put this around the grainfather and tighten it up with the other buckle (not shown). Go underneath the clips - this stops the straps sliding up/off the body of the grainfather.
Then attach the other one too
Adjust it so that the straps are directly opposite to prevent the GF swinging as you carry it.
The weight is held in part by friction from the straps on the GF body, and in part by the welded clips (I am hoping these are welded on strongly enough to carry it by... but that's how I tend to get it out of the cupboard anyway).
I wouldn't recommend carrying it like this when full of water/wort though.
But this makes it a hell of a lot easier to move around and get in/out of by brewing store.
