Got my first brew on in 17 years, it's a Coopers Stout, I kept it simple but added 1.3kg of brewing sugar, took a reading before adding the yeast and got a reading of 41.

Everything was surgicaly clean, however, I did add the yeast before taking the temp, after realising my mistake I took the temp and it was only 16 degrees, I hope it still ferments, not sure what the final abv will be if it all goes well, but after doing some research on the Coopers Stout I am hoping for 5.6% or 5.7%.

Will check it in 2 weeks time and see how it's going.

17 years.............. have you been poorly.....

Don't worry about the temp - it should be fine providing the temp rises a bit now.
What is the temp in the room where you have the fermenter sat?

hi welcome to the forum .. .
im doing a coopers stout aswell ...
but un like you...
its my first brew ever ...
so far so good ... :thumb:

i think yours should be ok...

but if you can get the temp up to about 22c that would be great ....
by the way like the vid ...
regards mick... :hat: .

welcome , you say you got a reading of 41 is that 1041 ? and if it ferments to around 1018 that will give you around 4.4% abv , if you brew this again i would use dark spray malt (or medium) instead of sugar

Thanks guys, I hope the brew will be ok, the room the fv sits in never goes below 18 degrees, and usually stays at 20, ive wrapped a bath towel around the fv to try and keep the temp the same, is this wise or should I remove the towel? the hydrometer reading said 41, im sure that's 1041 but can't be certain as it's the first time ive ever used a hydrometer to be honest.

Will give the dark spray malt a try next time pittsy, I just wanted to keep it basic for my first brew you know, this abv is weird, on the instructions it said if I added 1kg of brewing sugar it would give me an abv of 5.2%, will have to learn about abv and ways to increase it.

Good luck with your brew aswell Mick, will let you know how mine gets on in 2 weeks.

Thanks again fellas

Hi pittsy, just been looking at my hydrometer, there is a few scales on it, 40 is the same as 104, and my brew registered 41 on the scale where 40 was, and just over 104 on that scale, on the 104 scale the next reading is 117.

Just took a hydrometer reading from the fv, its now at 310, it was at 1050 at the start, so at least its been fermenting, its been in the fv for 11 days, will take another reading on monday or tuesday.

It smelled lovely when i opened the lid, i drank the sample, it tasted like stout, lacking in body though, still very drinkable, will use brew enhancer next time rather than brewing sugar.
