Hi guys anyone got any information on buying a good price mash tun as I'm just about there to do the full all grain brewing happy new year everyone

Cheers the one from brewstore is a bit pricey for a cheap made tun

Hi i bought one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Igloo-48q...041571?hash=item4af1301ae3:g:hgsAAOSwVL1WArg9

but i only payed 38 pounds for it, it holds heat really well my advise is dont buy to cheap! i originally payed 18 pounds for one and it was to be blunt ****
I have just bought same from ebay - again for £38 + £2 shipping. Just turned up this morning. Am awaiting SS ball valves and silcone hoses from http://www.angelhomebrew.co.uk/ to turn up so I can convert to MLT. Haven't decided about manifold yet. I have a 15mm copper one which may fit, but I am thinking of pushfit fittings and plastic pipe so I can clean it easier.

One of these makes a mash tun that easily accommodates the grains for a 5 gallon brewlength, up to 10 gallons of grain for a lower gravity beer:

About half the price of the Igloo cool box. To keep it cheap and simple, get a drum (pressure barrel) tap from your LHBS, cut a 25mm hole low down on the cool box for the tap's 3/4" bsp thread (the hole might need a bit of widening with a file). Then squander 2 or 3 quid on a 1m length of 130mm net curtain.

Curtain goes inside the MT, grains go into that. MT with filter for under £30 to get you started. Wrap a blanket, sleeping bag or w.h.y. around as secondary insulation, and it will lose less than 1c during the mash.

Cheers,
Chris

Just spotted this one, £15, one remaining

Well spotted! Looks fine for the job. Cheapo supermarket 'offers' are usually cool boxes with an air gap between the 2 skins. They might keep drinks cold for a bit, but they don't make good MTs

Are these cool boxes easy to modify
Yes - please re-read my post above. The only mod needed is a hole to accommodate the tap you intend to fit (or ball valve, etc). Any grain filters, manifolds, etc you use are then fitted to the tap, and don't involve modifying the cool box.
Cheers,
Chris

I bought a cheap cooler from my local ex catalogue shop, which cost me £10.00
Opening it up revealed an empty air space with a wafer of polystyrene.

I drilled 4 holes in the base of the outer skin.
Reassembled and screwed the 2 halves together with stainless self tappers, making sure not to penetrate the inner skin.
Then filled the four holes in the bottom with vermiculite, before plugging with grommets.

We use these things called blue pigs at work, they are 4 foot long blue sausages, used for soaking up spills, and are filled with really fine vermiculite.
Perfect for the job.
my MT is pretty well insulated, to the point that i went from 64.9° to 64.7°C in an hour.
