Hi can anyone out there tell me which side should face outward if I lag my boiler with a foil backed thermal :wha: mat? any suggestions would be very welcome.
Thanks BGG. :wha:

dont' think it makes much difference, but ......

I used a plain foam, ( very tight foam if you get my drift ) so I would think foam on the inside and foil to the outside to reflect any heat travelling through the foam. But not much heat gets through the foam matting though :thumb:

If you keep the foil on the outside it will be easier to clean and look Shiney  Not sure if it will make a great deal of difference to heat retention either way.

Id have the shiney side on the outside, keeps everything nic and clean. :thumb:
Heres my new mash tun being constructed. Its sits on foil backed foam now which isnt on the photo.

I've got a plain foam one and it sometimes sticks to the boiler meaning that I have to scrub bits of melted foam off after boiling. Think I would have the foil side facing inwards!

yes m8 i did the same :thumb:

IMO the foil wants to be facing inwards to relect the heat back into the HLT/boiler otherwise there will be heat loss to the foam although minimal. ;)

use a double layer - that way you can have foil on bot the inside and outside.
I noticed a big improvement once I added the second layer to both the HLT and the mash tun.
