Opened up my 5 gallon bucket of lager today - 2 weeks in - to check how far on it was.

1.020 :hmm: - ok, leave a week then. :thumb:

Then I noticed a dead fly floating on top. Fished it out.

How much could it have drank?

I'm gonna risk it.

ALWAYS risk it. Beer is surprisingly resilient to infection.

With my last brew, when I opened my no-chill FV to pitch the yeast it had a funky smell, kind of like when you leave a baked bean can for a few days. But undeterred I still pitched the yeast and bottled the resultant brew. It about a month into conditioning now and no off flavours/infection seems to have shown up and ithe beer tastes good. The only thing I can point to is a full/thick mouthfeel which may or may not have something to do with this funky baked bean smell in the n chil FV (which has completely disappeared now)

I think we're missing the important question here....did you manage to revive the fly?

If you believe in re-incarnation*, it was probably some old home-brewer come back to sample the delights.

*which I don't

'E's passed on! This fly is no more! He has ceased to be! 'E's expired and gone to meet 'is maker! 'E's a stiff! Bereft of life, 'e rests in peace! 'E's kicked the bucket, 'e's shuffled off 'is mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisible!!

THIS IS AN EX-FLY!!
