I was at my local Agri feeds place today to set up an account for CO2 and got chatting about beer to be informed that they can sell me 25kg of flaked barley or flaked maize for £7.50.
For one I'll certainly keep this in mind for the price of delivery online and waiting I can buy tenfold this but then my only problem is actually using it as the recommended usage is between 10% - 25%.
Anyone living near the rural community should enquire if they use it at all or possibly think of splitting with someone they brew with or a local homebrew club.

Nice heads up.
I’ve two local farms I use regularly for meat and stuff... I will strike up conversation on beer making next time !

£1.29 a Kg at Holland and Barratt at the moment with BOGOF deal. They also do Flaked Rye, Corn, Buckwheat and Millet. Not as cheap, but convenient and lower volume.

Put @Gunge down for 2 sacks. [emoji3]

The animal feed is just that...not cleaned properly ,screened properly or that traceable. It's highly unlikely it's classed as fit for human consumption.
I've been selling pet supplies for nearly 20 years and I definitely wouldn't use animal feed.
Edit...and I can get it cheaper than anyone!

Thanks for that Clint. Nice to hear from an expert. I was wondering whether animal feed would be fit for human consumption.

I wouldnt use animal feed simply because FB is so easy and cheap to get hold of. As Sadfield points out you can easily buy FB and other grains from H&B. I bought 3kg of FB a few months ago as I put it in everything I make (this is Gunges fault), it keeps well and I've still got loads left

Well I'm glad that I mentioned for the feedback and thanks for the heads up @Clint.
I've got it from HB before but thought I would check it out and besides for 25kg it only has a 4 month shelf life from its process as it's date stamped.....

Anyway what's this flaked barley all about...?

Aids head retention (and I think maybe adds some body, but I'd need to check on that). It definatley works. I put it in almost everything since Gunge was raving on about it last year and I tried it out. Oh, there are some purists who say get your brewing practices correct (right PH, etc, etc), you dont need it. But its a good cheat for those of us who cant be bothered with all that

FB (and as @Sadfield mentions Oats and malted wheat) adds protiens to the beer, and protiens create bubbles. There's a really good article on BYO.com about creating head/head retention but since they added a paywall you cant read it any more :(

Me too! Good advice from the Gungester I reckon. I use Hollandaise and Barrett though

Probably a lot easier in the long run just to raid the cereal boxes as needed, cornflakes make a fine substitute for any flaked maize requierments, and no brand wheat bricks are an easy substitute for wheat additions (flaked/torrified/etc).
And rolled oats are rolled oats..

If you are using normal breakfast cereals you need to watch the quantities you are using. Some people at my local HB club tried making beers where cereals made up about half of the grist. They said they were all pretty much undrinkable because of an overpoweringly strong metallic flavour. Most cereals are fortified with various vitamins and iron and when you use a lot of them the iron can really dominate the flavour.

I think the stuff from Holland and Barrett aren't fortified. Also in smaller quantities, it probably wouldn't be noticeable.

Is it a good substitute for carapils and does it have any fermentability (probably not a word) and flavour?

I currently use torrified wheat for aiding head retention, if I were to use FB instead would I just swap the same quantity?
Or should I use both??

Not really, it's a different effect. Carapils adds unfermentable sugars, flaked barley is unmalted and adds beta-glucans that add a creamy/oily texture (and potentially haze) rather than body. They are an adjunct and require the enzymes from malted barley to convert, but are fermentable. Traditionally used as a cheap ingredient to bring malt use down.

I have exactly the same question; I use torrified wheat for head retention, but think it sometimes leaves a very faint shredded wheat taste and smell in the beer, can I just substitute flaked barley 1:1?
