First hosepipe ban of the summer

We have more water than you can shake a stick at up here yet we are the first to get a hosepipe ban i think this tweet sums up my feelings -

BBC news -

Millions of people will be affected by the first hosepipe ban of the summer in England.

United Utilities (UU) said a temporary ban affecting seven million people in the north-west of England from 5 August would "safeguard essential supplies".

It said reservoir levels were already low and that hot weather was forecast for the rest of July.

Other water companies across England said they had adequate supplies and had no plans to impose similar bans.

Carlisle and north Eden Valley are exempt from the ban as they receive water from local sources - not the network which serves the rest of the region - and have not been as badly affected by the lack of rainfall, the firm said.

This is probably a silly question but..........
I take it that using a garden/yard tap connected to an immersion chiller would be one of the things on the not allowed to do list? Even though we're producing an essential food product.

My chiller only uses half a hose pipe. Last night there were floods here and whilst in Wether spoons the ceiling sprung a leak with torrents of rainwater pouring into the bar!

How exactly do they enforce a hosepipe ban if you choose to ignore it? This is after all a private company and your purchasing a product (even though its a utility) from said company. Once you've puchased the product it's yours. Right?

Edit: Having done a bit of googling, they can impose a £1000 fine. Most people that have been fined have only been caught because their neighbour reported them (B@stards!!!!)

I don't know the details but years ago someone I knew got caught having a water fight with a hose involved by a police helicopter.

If you were to catch the water to use for something else like watering the plants etc i doubt they would prosecute, offer any neighbour that can see you when you brew a free beer or two just in case.

Why? As soon as your wort is cooled to ambient temp (which doesnt notmally take longer then 8-12 hourse). Cool it a bit further to pitching temp if necessary, the chuck your yeast in

It's because there are only 7 million of you living up there, there's probably 3 times that many in london alone. You've got to save yours in case us southeners run out :nod:

To be honest I've never really read up on it, I know it's quite popular in Australia and to certain extent here too but I'm not sure I could leave 20 odd litres of my hard (?) work lying around without pitching brewing yeast.
Maybe if the ban is in place for a good while I could investigate though

I still find it very annoying they are asking us to do this while 3.1 million litres of water is lost every day in this country due to leaks.
