Ey up, got a porter brewkit for Christmas and got it all mixed up last week, just did what the instructions said and its bubbling about 35 pints ish away. Ive decided to bin the instructions now because they say bottle after only a week...doesnt seem right to me
Just seeing how and when to check sg and how/when to bottle
Total noob to this so already writing first brew off as just a learning step

Welcome to the forums.

Most on here advocate the 2, 2, 2 approach to timings. Thats 2 weeks in primary fermentation, then bottle. 2 weeks in the warm to carb up (secondaary fermenatation in the bottle), then 2 weeks cool conditioning before drinking.

You could check the gravity after 10 days and again at 2 weeks. If its got down to 1010 -1014 and the two readings are the same then its done primary fermentation and reayd to bottle.

Good luck with it, try and keep the temperature as constant as possible while in primary. If it drops below the temp the yeast is happy fermenting at you risk a stuck brew where the yeast goes sleepy - can be hard to get it going again.

Im going with the 2+2+2 and see how it goes...will i need to get some more suger in for bottling? Old boy at work said put some brown suger in bottle with the brew. ..its a porter so not sure on that

Brown sugar might be better for a porter.

Oh sorry, hi and welcome, your slippers are over there by the log fire. :-)

I've done 3 weeks the 2+2 but only because I was on holiday. Did no harm, and intact it settled very well and was a clean clear brew.

Won't matter so much with a porter I suppose.

Anyway dig around ask what you like :-)

Welcome, you'll find lots of useful stuff on here.

Ask questions no matter how daft they seem

Hello. I have brewed my first Kit of Norfolk Brown Ale which will be ready for Drinking on Sunday which is my Daughter's 2nd birthday Party so I'm taking some too her Party so I can share with my Siblings' and Father then also got my Coffee Ale (which I am making from Scratch using Strong Coffee, Cold Water and Yeast so Hope it Ferments and makes it alcoholic!)

I'm leaning towards three weeks in the FV now brumbrew. I had a Wherry that hadn't quite finished in the two weeks in the FV, I pitched Mangrove Jacks Workhorse trub so it wasn't the infamous "Wherry 1020 stick" it was however a pain having to release the pressure from the bottles and then leave them another fortnight as they were lifting all the yeast when I opened them but they're fine now. I know it could have been over priming but I used 1/2tsp per 500ml bottle. I do believe that three weeks in the FV does make the beer somewhat clearer but that remains to be proved.
