Hi, I'm pretty excited to be bottling my first brew today. I've had my IPA in secondary fermentation for thee weeks, dry hopped for the last 7 days. I chucked the hop pellets in loose. I have a film of floating hop material on the top and looking for tips on syphoning from carboy to bottling bucket without transferring the mucky spent hop material. Thinking of tying a muslin to the 'out' end of the syphon hose to catch it. Will that work? Any pitfalls to watch out for?

I've done that myself a few times mate and it works well. I tie it on with some cotton cord and sterilize the lot inside the bottling bucket.

I've since got a little nylon bag which came with a festival kit. This I tie to the suction side of the siphon and it also works well.

Don't worry if you see some "stuff" pushing through the muslin during the transfer. This should sink and it'll clear up in the bottle anyway.

You said three weeks in secondary. Did you rack from a primary to a secondary then? If so how long was it in primary?

Thanks. Yeah, I racked into secondary after fermenting in primary for 7 days.

It does no harm to rack into your bottling bucket a few hours before bottling, this will allow time for any crud that does transfer to settle out. You can be washing, sterilising the bottles during this time.

Did you get it bottled? How did it go?
Yeah. I used a sanitised muslin bag on the out end of the siphon when I transferred to bottling bucket, tied on with cotton. Seems to have worked a treat, the beer is free from stray bits of hop material. Got 32 bottles of IPA to look forward to drinking and sharing. Cheers.
