Morning all,

I'm planning to brew my first lager tomorrow to make the most of the cold conditioning weather (have fridge to ferment). Plan was for GH Chech lager with W34/70.

I'm looking for advice on if my water is not too hard for just CRS or if I should mix with ashbeck.

My water tap water is
CaCO3 135 (KH result)
Ca 95 (Ca result)
Mg 9.82
Na 42.6
SO4 109
Cl 66.9

I usually treat my water using the Jim's calculator which when I load for lager gives 0.6ml/l CRS and final liquor as:

Ca 84
Mg 9.8
Na 42.6
CO3 15
SO4 162
Cl 106

Please can anyone advise on if these values are too far out?

Cheers

That's a bit mineraly for a lager in my opinion. There's a lot of sulphate there which could give you a slightly harsh finish. I would probably use Ashbeck with a little calcium chloride in it (about 0.15g/L).

Thanks Steve, I'd compared to what recommended profile in John Palmers book and sulphate was about double (he recommended 50-100).

If ashbeck is 10ppm, would a 50:50 mix get me in the right ballpark (am I right in thinking it would take me to about 80ppm (assuming 10ppm for ashbeck is correct)?

Generally is my water ok for ales (for just CRS and gypsum/calcium additions)? It's what I've been doing until now for pales and heffe.

Cheers
