All,
Put my recent purchase of a Cygnet 18l tea urn from Gumtree (£10 :thumb: ) to use yesterday for a batch of 80/-
For 5USG (19l)
1.5 kg Coopers Light Malt Extract
1.0 kg Light Spray Malt
0.5 kg Crystal Malt
45g Goldings (Boiling)
10g Goldings (Finishing) (Used Goldings for finishing as well since I only bought the one pack of hops)
There are some reports to say that you have to remove the thermostat from the tea urns in order to achieve a boil. When I got the urn I tried a boil with water and it definitely boiled so just went ahead and used it without bypassing the thermostat - I took my eye off it for 1 minute and, you guessed it, it boiled over No major spill though, caught it "almost" in time.
Turned the urn down to "1" with the lid slightly cocked and it sustained the boil for the hour with the hops in - result.
It's also the first time I used my new brew room (converted tool-shed) which is just as well considering it boiled over as the missus wouldn't have seen the funny side of that had happened in the kitchen :nono:
Here are a couple of pics, first one with the crystal malt "steeping", the second was just before I took the SG before adding the yeast (yes, i'm the mad person that closed ferments in a demijohn)
