Hi guys..

Ill be bottling next week and I would like to try fining using gelatin (my first time to try that). Is it ok to do that is the primary FV also? (I only have one FV)
Does it need to be mixed in and will that risk disturbing the trub too much, or is it just poured in and it does it’s thing with no mixing?

I just did the cold crash last weekend and its been lagering away nicely now, so don't want to screw it up now :-)

No problem fining in the primary. I use 1/4 teaspoon (powdered) gelatin per 10l. I don't stir, think you're risking oxidisation if you do.

Boil 200ml water for 10 mins. Pour away all but 100 ml or so (guesstimate). Wait for water to cool a little (approx 80c or lower). Stir in gelatin and then into fermenter.

Good luck

I use 1/2tsp in 150ml of water for 15-20L batch. As previously stated let the boiled water cool before adding the gelatine. I give the wort a very gentle swirl with a sanitised paddle before pouring the gelatine in just to ensure that it is evenly distributed. Just make sure that you don't splash to introduce oxygen. You can bottle after 24-48hrs.

This is the process I use now. Works really well for me.

Ah yes, I remember reading that article a few weeks ago. Had forgotten he has poured it straight to the primary FV.
As a newbie at all this (only 2 brews under my belt yet) I’ve read so much that I can’t remember anymore what I’ve read 😂🤦🏻‍♂️

Rusty I have been home brewing for the best part of 30 years and so have forgotten a lot more of what I have read than you have

I have much more experience of forgetting things than most people

Just enjoy your hobby - it's easy to overcomplicate a process that, lets be honest, the human race has been doing for thousands of years

Don’t worry, I say that is the process I use now, but its not been unknown for me to forget to do it!
