Got my new burco coming in next few days thanks to a forum member and wondered about what filter might be best. Can get bazooka filters on aliexpress or fleabay for about 6 quid, but wondered whether this 1m flex hose would be better to fit for 4 quid. What you reckon?

I tried half of a one metre flexi a couple of brews ago in the boiler. It clogged almost instantly. There was a lot of stirring and scraping involved to get the burger emptied. Once I'd got half out I was able to grab the flexi and pull it out. I'll never try it again.

Since then I have been tilting the boiler so that the tap side is raised. This makes most of the trub settle away from the tap and with a fairly slow drain I've been getting very clear wort coming out. I'm still going through a sieve but it's picking up next to nothing.

Hi!
EBay has the SS braid - it costs more, but you don't have the hassle of cutting the fittings off and removing the rubber tubing.
There is a video on You Tube showing a guy using a Lauter Helix as a filter for his ACE microbrewery. I wondered about fitting a T- piece to the ball valve an putting SS braid around the wall of the boiler, fitting the ends into the T-piece.
Whirlpooling the wort should get most of the trub into a cone in the centre of the boiler, and, hopefully, there should be enough surface area in the braid to deal with the trub that remains.

Think I saw some of that on another thread on here when I was doing a search which was about half the price. Not sure if it was on ebay or not though. Ill have to do a bit more digging.

I was thinking the same thing with putting it around the outside and whirlpooling, but don't know much about the process at the moment. How/when would you do it?

Hi!
I planned to fit the filter to the boiler while the grain is mashing; boil, chill to just above pitching temperature and then whirlpool (nothing fancy - wine de-gasser and battery drill). After the whirlpool has settled, open the tap and drain slowly.

Bugger! Why did't I think of that instead of going mad with a paddle!:wave:On the other hand, I soldered an 8mm tube inside the take-off so that "tap wide open" I get a very slow drain-off rate!:gulp:

I switched to whole hops for this very reason. I also upgraded to a longer bazooka (a bit too long, so bent the end). I now get zero blockages, and considerably less trub in my FV. The plan is to basically bag any pellets I use, and make sure I still have whole hops in there to stop the trub blocking the bazooka.

I also tried whirlpooling (I have a drill just for brewing, and a wine degasser, already), but I'd need a much large immersion chiller for it to work, as my chiller stops the vortex dead. Luckily I don't need it anyway using whole hops.

Do you find bagging the pellets has any impact on the flavor etc.? I need to buy a bigger BIAB bag so was going to use the smaller one I have for pellets.

The time I tried it I used a big bag, so they could still move around. I can't say I noticed any reduction in flavour to be honest. I'd probably be more concerned with a smaller bag. Maybe add more hops.
