Can I ask everyone what you use to ferment in? And your reasons for your preference?

I got three standard plastic fv..my original kit came with two and they were cheap enough so I bought another. Plus easy to clean..

13.5L (3.5 US Gallon) SS Brewtech Stainless Steel bucket. It was stupidly overpriced but in my view worth it, given how easy it is to clean.

I've got a 21l SS Brewtech bucket and a cheapo plastic bucket from Geterbrewed. The SS bucket is lovely, but in hindsight is absolutely not worth the money. The plastic bucket does the same job equally as well, is probably easier to clean and cost 10x less than I paid for the shiny steel. The only pro to the steel is that if I ever give up brewing I can probably get a chunk of what I paid for it back by selling it.

23 FV with no tap, i use a syphon to bottle so no need for a tap meaning no risk of leaks and extra cleaning and sanitising the tap = lazy bar steward here.

Fermzilla. The closed transfers have been an absolute game-changer for heavily-hopped beers.

Big standard fermentation buckets. I've also got a couple of wide neck fermenters with taps, but I don't use them anymore, especially as I now have a home made bottling wand contraption that attaches to my syphon.

Sure they are twenty times or more the price but a plastic fermentor will last maybe two years so in forty years time you will be saving money (yeah thinking about it I can’t really defend my purchase on cost grounds but it is really shiny).

I have a Fermentasaurus (without pressure kit) and a 35L Spiedel fermenting barre.

I mainly use the ‘Saurus for lagers because of the dump bottle, but I bought a 10L minikeg and Sodastream set up recently which is currently carbonating a Czech Pale Lager so if all goes well I’ll get another couple of kegs and the pressure kit so I can do closed transfers. If all this goes to plan then I’ll be using my Fermentasaurus a lot more than I do currently (or I’ll end up upgrading to a Fermzilla or Fermenter King).

I tend to use the Spiedel for everything else, mainly because it’s easier to clean/sterilise because it can handle having boiling water poured into it. It’s also sturdier than a standard bucket.

Usually a standard 23l plastic Fv with a tap.
Broke a demijohn yesterday while starting an experimental small batch (3l) of Nettle "beer" so drilled a hole for an airlock in the cap of an empty 5l mineral water bottle, makes a good fv for small batches and as there are always plenty available from recent brews it can be recycled rather than cleaned after use. hole in the cap is a really good tight fit for the airlock.

i have a fermzilla and a fermentasauraus and a fast ferment and plastic buckets. i try to use the fermzs with every brew. When i build my large brewing shed im going to upgrade to stainless.

I've got 2 and the oldest is about 20 years old, the youngest maybe 15.

Got the speidel 30l with double taps (tap on top for blow off) top kit now nearly six years old. Mainly for wine and cider now. But my brewbuilder 73l conical with Acask cooling jacket to my sub zero chiller is an even better set up. Brews great and clean up quicker = Happiness!

The SS is nice to have, but saying plastic only lasts 2 years is not true, I've had one plastic bucket for 5 years and it's good as new, can't see any reason why it would need to be replaced in the foreseeable future.

As I said, I've got one and it does look nice. If you polish it enough you tell your reflection it was all worth it...
